Everything you need to know

A tax extension gives you 6 extra months to file your federal income tax return, moving your deadline from April 15 to October 15. You need one if you won't have your return ready by April 15. Note: it extends the filing deadline, not the payment deadline — taxes owed are still due April 15.

No. The IRS has stated that filing an extension does not increase your audit risk. About 19 million Americans file extensions every year — it's a completely routine, legitimate option that the IRS expects.

Yes. A tax extension only extends the time to FILE your return — not the time to PAY. Any taxes owed are still due by April 15. If you pay late, the IRS charges 0.5% per month in penalties plus interest. We recommend estimating your liability and paying what you owe by the deadline.

We submit your Form 4868 (personal) or Form 7004 (business) directly to the IRS via their Modernized e-File (MeF) system. You typically receive an IRS acknowledgement number within minutes. Over 99% of extensions are approved immediately.

Yes. We use 256-bit TLS encryption in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. We are an IRS-authorized e-file provider, meaning we've passed the IRS's rigorous security and suitability screening. We never sell or share your data.

We support IRS Form 7004 for all major business entity types, including C-Corporations (1120), S-Corporations (1120-S), Partnerships (1065), Multi-member LLCs, Trusts & Estates (1041), Non-profits (990), and more — 12+ IRS form types in total. The extension grants an automatic 6-month filing extension.

Most of the information you need is on your prior-year tax return (Form 1040 or business return). Here's where to look:

Personal extensions (Form 4868): You'll need your full name, SSN, address, and filing status — all found on page 1 of last year's 1040. For the estimated tax liability and payments, check your prior-year return, recent pay stubs, or 1099s. If you're unsure, the IRS recommends using last year's figures as a starting estimate.

Business extensions (Form 7004): You'll need your business name, EIN (found on your IRS EIN confirmation letter, prior returns, or bank statements), entity type, and the IRS form your business files. Your CPA or accountant can provide the estimated tax figures.

Helpful IRS resources: Create an account at IRS Online Account to view balances and payment history, or use the IRS Get Transcript tool to download copies of prior returns.

The estimated total tax liability is your best estimate of the total federal tax you'll owe for the year. Here's where to find it:

Best sources: Start with your prior-year tax return — look at Line 24 on Form 1040 (personal) or Line 31 on Form 1120/1120-S (corporate). If your income is similar to last year, this is a good baseline. For current-year adjustments, review your pay stubs (year-to-date withholding), 1099s, or quarterly estimated tax payment vouchers (Form 1040-ES or 1120-W).

Quick estimation: Take last year's total tax, then adjust up or down based on income changes this year — new job, raise, investment gains or losses, or business revenue changes. If you're unsure, it's safer to estimate slightly higher — underpaying by more than 10% can trigger IRS penalties.

Important: The extension extends the time to file, not the time to pay. Any tax owed beyond what you've already paid (withholding + estimated payments) should be paid by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. Your accountant or CPA can also provide a projection if needed.
